100 Person Site Evacuaiton and First Aid Kit Contents:
A First Aid Kit is an essential feature of a safe workplace. As an Employer, you are required by law to make ‘adequate and appropriate first aid arrangements’ so that if a member of your team becomes injured or ill at work they are able to receive help to treat minor injuries and to prevent minor injuries/illnesses developing into serious health emergencies. Having a First Aid Kit which is appropriate to your work place can save lives.
The kind of work you do and the locations and settings within which you do that work will help you decide what to include within your First Aid Kit. It can be helpful to think about workplace history (what injuries and illnesses have been experienced at work even if they haven’t necessarily been caused by the work itself), what are the hazards of the work or the work setting (stairs, lifting, operating machinery), what is your team’s work pattern (is travel required or working night shifts), and lastly how many people are there in your team. Although not a legal requirement, the regulatory body for workplace safety, the Health and Safety Executive, strongly recommends including in your first aid planning the First Aid needs of people within your work place or work setting who are not employees, such as clients, service providers and the general public.
In addition to a suitable First Aid Kit, the law requires employers to nominate a person who is in charge of first aid arrangements and to provide information to all team members about what the First Aid arrangements are.
