A defibrillator is an essential part in trying to save the life of someone who’s in cardiac arrest. They are safe to use in adults and children. When using an AED on a child between 1 and 8 years, it is recommended to use a reduced shock where possible. Some defibrillators require the electrode pads to be changed to specific ones for child use (as with this model), whereas others can attenuate (modify) the shock simply by pressing a button or switch on the device itself.

You don’t need to be trained to use a defibrillator – anyone can use it. You can't deliver a shock accidentally, the defibrillator will only allow you to administer a shock if it is needed.

In addition to your Defibrillator, it’s a good idea to have easily to hand the following items that you will also need:

• A towel, tissues, or wipes to dry the casualty’s chest if it is wet or sweaty

• A razor to shave the person’s chest

• Scissors to cut away clothing

• A face shield for administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
