A defibrillator is an essential part in trying to save the life of someone who’s in cardiac arrest. They are safe to use in adults and children. When using an AED on a child between 1 and 8 years, it is recommended to use a reduced shock where possible. Some defibrillators require the electrode pads to be changed to specific ones for child use (as with this model), whereas others can attenuate (modify) the shock simply by pressing a button or switch on the device itself.

You don’t need to be trained to use a defibrillator – anyone can use it. You can't deliver a shock accidentally, the defibrillator will only allow you to administer a shock if it is needed.

In addition to your Defibrillator, it’s a good idea to have easily to hand the following items that you will also need:

    • A towel, tissues, or wipes to dry the casualty’s chest if it is wet or sweaty

    • A razor to shave the person’s chest

    • Scissors to cut away clothing

    • A face shield for administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

9 out of 10 cardiac arrests that occur outside hospital are tragically fatal. It is estimated that the early use of a defibrillator (within 3-5 mins and before the emergency services have arrived) can increase survival rates to the range of 50 -70%.

Once you are the owner of your Cardiac Science G5 Aed Fully Automatic Defibrillator, don't forget to register it with The Circuit. The Circuit is the national defibrillator network, and it connects defibrillators to NHS ambulance services across the UK so that in those crucial moments after a cardiac arrest, they can be accessed quickly to help save lives.
